Hundreds of folks celebrated the courage of Dr. Martin Luther King as we gathered at the Downtown Plaza and marched in his honor. The program at Trinity United Methodist Church featured music and words by special guests including the new Bethel AME pastor, an Obama campaign organizer, a representative from the Peace & Justice Center, and the founder of a West African aid organization based in Chico.

Chico author and wildlife activist Tony Nicosia read from his autobiography, including his experiences being hospitalized as a child with rheumatic fever, growing up in an orphanage, serving in Vietnam, surviving colon cancer, being a nature photography, and fighting to preserve wild life and wild spaces in Chico and beyond.

A silent candlelight vigil was called for healing and sustainable peace in the region, as we mourned the dead and sent prayers to the wounded.

Theresa is a poet and teacher of writing, a friend to many, and a long-time community activist in Chico who has been “dancing on the edge” with cancer. The gathering was a benefit for her spiritual and financial needs.

Shocking to think we are almost in the 6th year of our military misadventures in Iraq. Thousands of American soldiers and families have been destroyed, not to mention the million or more killed, wounded and/or displaced Iraqis. Over a trillion dollars has been spent, and economists such as Joseph Stiglitz predict this war will cost over $3 trillion. How much death and destruction are we willing to accept? 
The "Beyond War, A New Economy is Possible" Campaign is in the process of planning for the unfortunate anniversary. We are working with the many ideas of how the resources fueling the US was machine can be redirected to promote the human condition and encourage spiritual growth.
