\;On March 19\, 2003\, the United States launched an illegal and immoral war against the people of Iraq. For six long years\, our government lied\, all the while human rights and the rule of law have been disregarded\, the death toll has mounted\, and massive destruction has left Iraq in ruins. The war has drained our national treasury while the profits of oil companies and war profiteers have soared.
Although we are working through the Beyond War Campaign to redirect military spending to address the economic crisis\, we stopped our work\, lit a candle\, and remembered those that have been killed\, wounded\, dislocated and lost loved ones to this war.

With President Obama's announcement of his intention to cut the federal deficit in half\, we began to aswer the question\, "\;How do we want the deficit reduced? Which programs do we want cut?"\;
At a time when the economic crisis revivals the Great Depression and effects more Americans than at anytime in history\, the coalition is calling on a careful examination of the almost 60% of federal discretionary spending on the military. \; Without weakening our commitment to strong national defense\, it is in the best interest of all Americans to examine whether military expenditures can be redirected to domestic needs.
On the eve of the 6th anniversary of the war on Iraq\, we participated in a community forum to think about how we want our budget restructured.

Ruby Perry\, longtime community organizer and activist\, offered a training to "\;Focus on the Roots"\;. \; The idea came from a discussion about having a basic shared language for our work to build a movement for change. Many of us already understand the "\;how to's"\; of organizing but we just don't have a shared language to effectively work together.
