In the last century, Quaker sociologist Elise Boulding defined a culture of peace as, “ a mosaic of identities, attitudes, values, beliefs, and institutional patterns that lead people to live nurturantly with one another, deal with their differences, share their resources, solve their problems, and give each other space so no one is harmed and everyone’s basic needs are met.” It’s so easy today to be overcome by the turbulence of events, such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and there are so many things we have on our minds, like health care, climate change, and the economy that the Chico Peace and Justice Center wants to ask, What does a culture of peace look like in this century?

In Butte County, many organizations are working toward a culture of peace, whether it’s through the environment, social issues, or even economic concerns.  Which direction does your organization take? We invite all Butte County organizations, for profit or non profit, to consider participating, and to share with us, using the medium of a window display, your top single priority that creates a culture of peace in our community. As Elise Boulding said, “we cannot do internationally what we don’t know how to do at home. And that’s why we have to work on developing our own cultures of peace.”
