Red Bluff hosted the World March for Peace and Nonviolence, which began to circle the earth on October 2nd and will end its trip January 2, 2010 in Punta de Vacas, Argentina. The World March is calling for an end to nuclear arms and the end to violence of all kinds. Its group of 100 dedicated marchers includes two people from Redding who will complete the entire trip.
Charles Lasater and Synthia Penn, both from Redding, are members of the base team of marchers making the entire journey from New Zealand to Argentina.
The marchers talked about their experiences on this amazing campaign and all the people it has touched so far. There was time to talk to them also. We also had the honor of hearing guest speakers from Chico State, the Chico Peace and Justice Center, Veterans for Peace/Sacramento, ACLU, Citizens for a Responsible Government, Red Bluff High School, Red Bluff Art Gallery, a soldier who experienced nuclear testing in Nevada in 1953, and the Pangea World Community. Poets were also read at the ceremony.
