"California State Budget" Town Hall Meeting - Guest Speaker: Lenny Goldberg

The Northern California State Budget Alliance will host a town hall meeting to discuss the current state budget crisis. Representatives from various community sectors, a local economist, and a tax expert will discuss community needs and concerns as compared to the Governor’s proposed budget. Time will be dedicated for citizen input.

During this economic downturn and the predicted $20 billion state budget shortfall, the Governor has proposed a budget that drastically cuts spending by at least 10% in almost every state department. This move would cut services for many Californians, especially the poor, the elderly and the disabled.

We are now offering a free weekly class geared towards second language learners at all levels. Come to learn and perfect your English skills in a comfortable environment. Instructor Daniel Moglen has extensive experience teaching English in Korea, Spain, Nicaragua, and the United States, ranging from children to adults. He has a degree in Linguistics from Berkeley, and will be pursuing a Masters degree in TESOL in the fall.

Pathway to Peace

Children's Playground to MLK Park

Join the Chico Peace & Justice Center in this walk and fundraiser for peace and justice in our time. Families will collect pledges in advance and complete a walk from Children’s Playground to the MLK, Jr. Park on 20th Street. For a full-color brochure and a pledge sheet, send an email to chico-peace@sbcglobal.net.

Walkers will stop at Peace Checkpoints along the way (map coming soon), and each participant will collect mementos of peace (stones, stickers, buttons) in bags provided by the sponsors of the march.

At the MLK, Jr. Park, we’ll close with a celebration of the event and a rally commemorating the anniversary of the Iraq War. Our goal is 100 in Pathway to Peace Pilgrims obtaining $100 in pledges, but all participants are welcome, no matter what amount they are able to collect.

7th Anniversary of the War in Iraq - Call for Withdrawal

Join us as we mark the passage of seven long years of the War in Iraq. Details will follow but we will have Kathy Kelly in town helping us mark this sad day. MLK Park will also be the end of the Pathway to Peace March (see above).

Kathy Kelly co-coordinates Voices for Creative Nonviolence, (www.vcnv.org) a campaign to end U.S. military and economic warfare. As a co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, she helped form 70 delegations, from 1996 - 2003, that openly defied economic sanctions by bringing medicines to children and families in Iraq. Kathy and her companions lived in Baghdad throughout the 2003 “Shock and Awe” bombing.

More recently, she has visited Gaza and Pakistan, writing eyewitness accounts of war’s impact on civilians.

Come to the 29th annual Pancakes for Peace breakfast. This event is more than a fundraiser for the Chico Peace and Justice Center. It is a family and community tradition!

From the organic pancakes with real maple syrup to the fresh fruit salad, from the silent auction to the easter egg hunt, there is something for everyone. The all-you-can-eat pancakes will be served all morning.

The Easter Egg Hunt begins at 11am.
