One Mile, Bidwell Park
We commemorated the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II at 8 am at One Mile. We walked to a meditative spot on the creek to ring bells and reflect by the water.
We met again at One Mile at 10:50am on Monday, August 9 to commemorate the destruction of Nagasaki.
Our observance was part of a national day of commemoration being sponsored by Peace Action. In upstate New York, a mother and daughter lit candles at dusk to reflect on their lives and pray for those lost sixty-five years ago. On Seattle's Green Lake, over a thousand people listened to storytelling and music before floating lanterns out on the water. Several Peace Action staff and over a hundred youth remembered the two days by engaging in nonviolent direct action outside of Los Alamos nuclear weapons base in solidarity with those peoples affected by radiation and bomb testing around the world.
