Wednesday, October 19 at 5pm
Masonic Family Center, 1110 W. East Ave.
Global oil supply expert Antonia Juhasz will spoke in Chico at the annual dinner of the Chico Peace & Justice Center, Wednesday, October 19, 6-8 pm at the Masonic Family Center, 1110 West East Avenue, Chico. Juhasz is the author of Black Tide (2011), an exploration of the Gulf Oil disaster, and The Tyranny of Oil (2008), describing the manipulation of oil supplies and prices by major multinational oil companies. She is also founder of the Energy Program at Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights non-profit organization.
The Peace & Justice Center dinner took as its theme "Peace and Action" and provided a forum for discussion of local-to-global actions that can and are counteracting loss of human rights and social justice in places like the Gulf. The dinner also emphasized the Peace & Justice Center's campaign for Fair Trade that has led to Chico being a Fair Trade Town, with a number of local businesses carrying Fair Trade items.
The dinner itself will feature Vegetarian Delights of India, and the program will also honor Chico youth activists and the presentation of the annual Peace Endeavor Award to longtime activists and organizations in the Northstate.
There was also be a raffle with prizes including two get-away weekends and more. Tickets for the raffle were $5 each or 5 for $20. Tickets could be purchased at the Peace Center on Broadway.
Tickets for the dinner were available at Lyon Books, 121 W. 5th Street, and at the Peace & Justice Center, 526 Broadway, both in Chico. $25-$35 before October 12, $35 thereafter.
A new feature of this year's dinner will be the raffling of theme baskets--baskets filled with cool stuff. We need volunteers to solicit donations and potentially donate items to help create these raffle prizes. Themes open are: The Beer Lion, The Handicrafter, The Scrapbooker, The Jewelry Maker, The Traveler, The Moviegoer, and The Music Lover. If you can contribute to a basket or are willing to coordinate one, please contact Stephanie Williams <srwilliams@holymonkey.com>
