About Fair Trade
Our intention is to offer the Chico area products from around the world that support the families that produce them. We also strive to educate local people about living wage and fair value issues. Ten Thousand Villages' goal is to “provide vital, fair income to third world artisans by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.” Ten Thousand Villages also offers an online Gift Registry program. Registry offers the unique oppurtunity to create a personalized list of desired crafts and decor while helping spread the fair trade message to friends and family.
Purchases not only support the center, but also families from third world villages in Asia, Africa, Latin and South America. Please contact the CPJC to speak to a representative about a Fair Trade presentation at your school or organization. Our Fair Trade program is run by a team of dedicated volunteers. The town of Chico a Fair Trade Town?!
Thats right people! Join the coalition to help make Chico a Fair Trade Town! In January 2008, the Chico Peace and Justice Center Fair Trade team will begin the process of developing a campaign to be recognized as a Fair Trade Town.
To do this, the following goals should be met:
*Form a committee that meets on a regular basis. The aim of the committee is to increase awareness of and demand for Fair Trade products through education, outreach and events.
*Organize businesses to sell Fair Trade products in local stores, cafes and other venues.
*Use Fair Trade products from a number of local organizations, such as places of worship, schools, hospitals and offices.
*Attract media attention and visible public support, including press and radio.
*Have the town council pass a resolution supporting Fair Trade and the local campaign.
